Design Inspiration - Powder Rooms

While small in size, the powder room is the perfect space to add drama. The small scale allows you to incorporate dramatic items like wallpaper and unique lighting while not breaking the bank. Here are a few of our favourite powder rooms from over the years.

By hanging the pendant in front of the mirror the reflection doubles the sparkle in this bath. The clean lines of the vanity contrast with the sheepskin rug, unexpected in a powder room.

krepela.jpg

Drama comes in the form of texture & contemporary details in this space. Moody wallpaper is balanced with the sleek geometry of the floating vanity & sink.

cochrane.jpg

A reclaimed bowl & faucet add loads character to this space. The leather mirror frame was made by a family friend and adds even more personality.

bracken.jpg

This room is like a jewel box. From the mosaic glass tile to the agate waterfall countertop, this space absolutely glows.

You can never go wrong with wallpaper in a powder room and this large scale pattern is a perfect match to the furniture style vanity.

mohamed.jpg

We incorporated a vestibule into this powder room which was coined the "ladies lounge". The perfect place to touch up your make-up during a dinner party. Textural wallpaper and jewel-like sconces at the perfect amount of femininity.

Traditional damask wallpaper and a furniture style vanity take this powder room next level.

We took the tile up the walls in this space creating a quiet backdrop for this supersleek Duravit vanity.

Design Inspiration - Bright & Fresh Laundry Rooms

It's simply unavoidable, the piles of laundry must be reckoned with. It doesn't need to be so bad if you have a room that's bright & cheery. Here are a few of our favourite spaces to give you a little inspiration for your next laundry day.

15.jpg

Oriental rugs and an antique desk add charm to this space.

This laundry is tucked into the pantry making it an easily accessible, multi-functional space.

55.jpg

Cream on cream finishes keeps it feeling fresh while stacked machines free up space for storage.

krepela.jpg

We always try to incorporate a full height cabinet in our laundry designs. Perfect for luggage, broom and vacuums.

hurtubise.jpg

Who says laundry rooms can't be sophisticated? Sleek gray cabinets feel in tune with the rest of this contemporary home. The raised laundry machines make the work a little less back-breaking while the flush cabinets above make the storage easily reachable.

Design Inspiration - Fireplaces

Fireplaces will always be a crucial element of any home, acting as the heart of living and dining spaces alike. We've gathered up some of our favourite fireplace designs to inspire you for your next project.

Lastly, one of our favourite designs: Contrasting limestone & walnut panels provide a stunning focal point in this bedroom, the ideal retreat for the end of the day.

Contemporary Family Home

We were delighted to work with this young family to design their dream home along with Grandscape Homes & Phase One Design. The open layout is perfect for a growing family while the sophisticated palette and clean details create a timeless refuge.

In the front entrance a sculptural coat hook adorns the wall in lieu of a traditional coat closet.

The central staircase just off the foyer acts as a room divider while the glass panels and floating stairs keep the space feeling open.

In the kitchen, high gloss grey built-in cabinetry conceals the door to the mudroom.

The master ensuite is a relaxing haven with a 2-way fireplace backing onto the master bedroom. The ideal retreat to end a busy day.

The basement with a wet bar, built in wine & sculpture wall and fitness room - the perfect for space for entertaining, lounging or re-energizing.

A Traditional Family Home

This is definitely one of our favourite projects to date. A busy family of four with a love of cape cod design and traditional detailing was looking for a cozy refuge. Designed with family in mind, every nook and cranny was thoughtfully put to use.

The front hall with full height paneled walls and coffered ceiling is grand yet light & airy.

01.jpg

The front parlour is a perfect escape for fireside evening cocktails.

10.jpg

The dining room is directly across the hall from the parlour. Wall to wall drapes, rich velvets and the traditional chandelier lend a cozy & intimate atmosphere.

Shimmery damask wallpaper and a custom furniture-like vanity add a glamorous feel to the powder room.

Detail is everything in this home. The coffer ceiling and crown details were meticulously designed to appear grand yet not overwhelming.

11.jpg

The cozy living room is perfect for snuggling up by the fire.

This jewel box of a home office is tucked into the stair landing descending to the lower level.

The library at the top of the upper level stairs is set between the kids bedrooms, perfect for homework and crafts.

The kid's rooms are their own  private sanctuary, complete with loft & ensuite. Fun details like the daisy pattern tile detail in the daughter's bathroom add personality while remaining timeless.

The master bedroom with more beautiful panel work and an end of bed console with pop up television.

Traditional detailing continues into the master ensuite with checkerboard marble floors.

In the basement, the bar is perfect for social gatherings. Who needs to leave the house when you have a bar like this?

Adjacent to the bar is the media room, the essential unwind area with oversized seating and relaxed materials.

Another hidden gem - a bookcase concealing a secret playroom.

Lighting as Art

Decorative lighting is like your favourite piece of art. It adds personality to your home, taking a space from humdrum to wow. Here are some of our favourite spaces - all with light fixtures that add life and some serious drama.

A family friendly renovation

To many of us the 90’s doesn’t seem very long ago, but for this home built late in the decade the last fifteen years had not been so kind. Our clients have a busy family with two soon to be teenage boys and many friends close by. They had outgrown the original suburban style of the house, but loved their neighborhood and close-knit community, so a full renovation was in order. We had the pleasure to help transform this home from 90's drab into a sophisticated and contemporary family friendly home.

02A.jpg

The homeowners have collected artifacts from various world travels and wanted dedicated display space for their treasures. The asymmetrical walnut shelving on either side of the linear fireplace is a far cry from the honey oak it replaced. Each niche features a mini LED spotlight to highlight each piece. Lots of texture and pattern make this family room a cozy gathering place where they can enjoy their collection.

08A.jpg

The kitchen design was kept clean & minimal, with extra thick counter tops, backpainted glass and a mix of dark stained walnut and high gloss zebrano woods.

11.jpg

The dining room is intimate and comfortable with a focus on the art collection. The metallic finish on the ceiling provides a warm glow and subtle formality.

16A.jpg

The dramatic powder room features a custom backlit agate vanity, walnut panelling and sparkling glass tile. The overall effect is truly jewel box-like.

20.jpg

The family library was designed as a place for the kids to do homework and crafts. This space was actually captured from above the existing family room’s two story height, giving the clients some much needed extra room. Lots of storage and a built-in bench seat help to keep things in order.

32A.jpg
33.jpg

The basement media room and bar are a play room for kids and adults alike. Multiple screens allow for multi-player video games or different sporting events all at the same time.  A mobile bar island and durable tile floors make this a space easily adapted to many functions.

We love how this home has maintained a sophisticated feel while remaining family-friendly. The richness of materials, lots of intentional storage and contemporary lines keep the home clean, elegant and welcoming.

A nod to the past

Upcycle, repurpose, vintage - you hear these words used a lot lately. Whatever term you want to use, we’re definitely seeing a trend towards products and materials that have a sense of history. Perhaps our busy, plugged-in lives are giving us a yearning for a simpler time, for meals made from scratch, hand-knitted sweaters and patchwork quilts. Here are a few products that all give a nod to the past, whether it be reusing something that no longer has use in our modern world, or a cheeky twist on an antique design.

leebroom.png

Paring down a light fixture to bare bones is nothing new - there are quite a few different versions out there. But this Crystal Bulb Pendant by Lee Broom is a cut above. This simplest form of a light is taken to a whole new level - each bulb is hand blown and then cut with a classic crystal pattern. Stunning.

debethune-pocketwatch-iphone-case.jpg

This is where modern technology gets an unexpected traditional twist. Luxury watchmaker De Bethune embedded a working pocket watch into an iphone case.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Scandinavian & Shaker designs, these chairs by O&G studio are modern yet feel as if they've been around forever.  ABCD design calls them "modern furnishings with an old soul".  We definitely agree.

inside out clock.jpg

This inside-out collection by Polart is so whimsical and fun. They've taken traditional favorites and created statement pieces for contemporary interiors.

How have you added a sense of history to your interior? Is it a beloved antique or a quirky accessory with a wink to the past? We'd love to hear!
